Power factor correction and load profiling

If your TNB bill carries a low power factor penalty, or your factory runs motors, compressors and drives, we measure the real load first and then size the capacitor bank — so you pay for what is needed, not a guess.

Scope of work

Measure, design, install, verify

Load profiling

Profil beban

  • A power analyser logs voltage, current, kW, kVA, kVAR, power factor and harmonics at your main incomer, typically over 7 to 14 days.
  • Profile shows peaks, idle load, shift patterns and when the power factor drops below the 0.85 threshold used for TNB penalty billing on applicable tariffs.
  • Harmonic distortion (THD) is recorded so we know whether a plain capacitor bank is safe or a detuned reactor is required.
  • Findings summarised in a short report with the recommended kVAR rating and step configuration.

Correction equipment

Peralatan pembetulan

  • Automatic power factor correction (APFC) panels with multi-step capacitor banks and a controller.
  • Detuned reactors (typically 5.67% or 7%) where harmonics or resonance risk is present.
  • Fixed capacitors at large motors, or centralised correction at the main switchboard.
  • Existing capacitor banks inspected, tested and repaired or replaced when capacitors have aged or failed.

Verification and savings

Pengesahan

  • Before and after readings so the power factor improvement is documented, not assumed.
  • Reduced current and kVA demand, which frees capacity on transformers and cables.
  • Support for your own energy reporting and, for large users, for EECA 2024 and energy audit work.
  • Follow-up checks at 3 to 6 months to confirm steps are switching correctly.

How we work

From survey to handover

STEP 1

Bill and single-line review

We read recent TNB bills and the single-line diagram to find where correction should sit.

STEP 2

Load profiling

Analyser installed safely at the incomer; data captured across real production days.

STEP 3

Design and installation

APFC panel or capacitor bank sized from the data, installed with proper protection and cabling.

STEP 4

Commissioning and report

Controller set up, steps tested under load, and before-and-after power factor documented.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is power factor and why does TNB penalise a low one?
Power factor compares useful power (kW) with total power drawn (kVA). A low figure means more current for the same work, which loads TNB equipment. Applicable commercial and industrial tariffs carry a penalty when the monthly average falls below 0.85.
Why do you profile the load before quoting a capacitor bank?
Because oversized banks cause over-correction and resonance, and undersized banks leave penalties on the bill. Seven to fourteen days of data gives us the real kVAR requirement and shows harmonic levels.
Do I need a detuned reactor?
If your site has VSDs, UPS, LED drivers or other non-linear loads, harmonics can overload plain capacitors or cause resonance. We read the THD during profiling and specify detuned reactors when the data calls for it.
Can you repair an existing capacitor bank?
Yes. We test capacitors, contactors and controllers, replace failed units, and re-set the controller. Many older banks only need new capacitors and a controller reset.
How long does the installation take?
Once the equipment is ready, a typical APFC installation takes one to three days, planned around your production shutdown so operations are not interrupted.
