Frequently asked questions

What earth resistance value is acceptable?

The acceptable value depends on the installation type, the protective device and the design requirement. We report against the applicable requirement for your site rather than a single number, and tell you plainly where improvement is needed.

Why test earthing if nothing seems wrong?

Earth electrodes corrode, dry out and get disturbed by civil work. A poor earth often shows no symptoms until a fault or lightning strike makes it dangerous.

How often should earthing be tested?

Many sites test annually, or after major construction, lightning events or solar and EV installation. We recommend an interval based on your installation and risk.

Can you improve a poor earth?

Yes. Options include extra earth rods, deeper electrodes, bentonite or chemical earthing compounds and better bonding. We retest after the work.

Do you test RCDs and ELCBs too?

Yes. We test trip current and trip time and recommend replacement of devices that fail to operate correctly.
