Guide · Troubleshooting

Why does my power keep tripping?

A breaker that trips is doing its job: it is stopping a fault or overload that could damage wiring or start a fire. This guide explains the common causes of power tripping, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a registered electrician.

The causes

Three kinds of trip, three different problems

Overload

Beban lampau

  • Too many appliances on one circuit, such as an aircond, kettle and heater together.
  • The MCB trips after a few minutes, or only when certain appliances run together.
  • Common in homes where aircond and water heaters were added after the original wiring.
  • Fix: spread loads across circuits, add dedicated circuits or upgrade the DB and supply.

Short circuit

Litar pintas

  • Live and neutral touch, usually from damaged cables, loose strands or a failed appliance.
  • The MCB trips instantly, often with a bang, spark or burning smell.
  • Commonly follows rodent damage, nail or drill punctures and burnt sockets.
  • Fix: locate and repair the faulty cable or appliance; do not just reset repeatedly.

Earth leakage

Kebocoran bumi

  • Current leaks to earth through damaged insulation, moisture or a faulty heater, and the ELCB or RCCB trips.
  • Often happens when it rains, or when a water heater, washing machine or aircond is on.
  • Can also be caused by an old ELCB that is overly sensitive or worn out.
  • Fix: isolate circuits, test insulation and repair the leaking part; replace a faulty ELCB only after testing.

How we work

From survey to handover

STEP 1

Note what trips and when

Is it the main breaker, one MCB or the ELCB? Does it happen at a certain time, with rain or with a certain appliance?

STEP 2

Unplug and test

Switch off and unplug appliances on the affected circuit, reset, then plug back one at a time to find the culprit.

STEP 3

Do not bypass or upsize

Never tape a breaker, bypass the ELCB or fit a larger breaker; this removes the protection that prevents fire and shock.

STEP 4

Call a registered electrician

If tripping continues, or you smell burning, see scorch marks or the DB is warm, stop and call. If the whole street is dark, contact TNB Careline at 15454.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MCB, ELCB and RCCB?
An MCB protects cables against overload and short circuits. An ELCB or RCCB detects current leaking to earth and protects people from electric shock. Modern installations use RCCB or RCD devices, while ELCB is the older term many people still use.
Why does my ELCB trip only when it rains?
Water ingress into outdoor fittings, junction boxes, lights or aircond units creates leakage paths. Diagnosis involves isolating circuits and testing insulation.
Can a faulty appliance trip the whole house?
Yes. A leaking water heater, washing machine or aircond can trip the ELCB, which in some DBs disconnects the whole house.
Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker?
Resetting once is fine. If it trips again straight away, there is a real fault, and repeatedly resetting can overheat cable or cause a fire. Leave it off and call an electrician.
Does Elektrika offer same-day repair for tripping?
Yes, we offer same-day response across the Klang Valley, Cyberjaya and Seremban, subject to location and schedule. We are not a 24-hour service.
