Single-phase vs 3-phase power: which do you need?
Most Malaysian homes run on single-phase supply and most factories on 3-phase, but the line between them is blurring as homes add aircond, EV chargers and solar. This guide explains the difference in plain language and shows when an upgrade makes sense.
The basics
What actually differs between the two
Single-phase supply
Satu fasa
- One live conductor and a neutral, delivering 230 V at 50 Hz to sockets, lights and ordinary appliances.
- Standard for most terrace houses, apartments and small shops.
- A 32 A single-phase circuit carries roughly 7 kW, which is why 7 kW is the usual home EV charger size.
- Large loads share one live conductor, so heavy use can overload the main breaker.
3-phase supply
3 fasa
- Three live conductors plus a neutral, giving 400 V between phases and 230 V from any phase to neutral.
- A 32 A three-phase circuit carries roughly 22 kW, more than three times a single-phase 32 A circuit.
- Needed for most industrial machines, large motors, lifts and big aircond systems.
- Loads are spread across phases, giving smoother operation and less voltage drop on long runs.
Where each fits
Sesuai di mana
- Single-phase: apartments, small homes, small offices and shops with light loads.
- Either: larger houses, depending on aircond, heaters, pool equipment and EV charging.
- 3-phase: workshops, restaurants with commercial kitchens, factories and warehouses.
- 3-phase is also the usual route for rooftop solar and 11 kW or 22 kW EV charging.
Who it’s for
Where this work fits
Homeowners with growing loads
Three or more aircond units, a heater per bathroom and an EV charger can outgrow single-phase.
Shop and restaurant owners
Ovens, chillers, freezers and cassette aircond often justify 3-phase.
Workshop operators
Machines labelled 400 V three-phase simply will not run on single-phase supply.
Solar and EV adopters
Higher-capacity systems are commonly connected on 3-phase.
How we work
From survey to handover
List your loads
Write down every large appliance: aircond, heaters, ovens, pumps, machines and EV chargers.
Check your main breaker and meter
Look at the main breaker rating on your DB and whether your meter is single-phase or a 3 phase meter.
Look for the warning signs
Frequent main breaker trips, dimming when aircond starts and no room for new circuits are common signs.
Get a load calculation
An electrician calculates maximum demand and tells you whether single-phase is enough or 3-phase is the right path.
