Lightning risk assessment: do you need protection?
Malaysia has high lightning activity, but not every building needs the same level of protection — or any external system at all. A lightning risk assessment replaces guesswork with a structured calculation. This guide explains what it covers and how it fits with installation work.
The assessment
What a risk assessment looks at
The structure and its setting
Struktur & lokasi
- Size, height and shape of the building and its roof.
- Local lightning flash density and surrounding terrain, trees and neighbouring structures.
- Construction materials and whether the building has metal frames or reinforcement.
- Whether the site is isolated, on high ground or among taller structures.
What is inside and who is exposed
Kandungan & penghuni
- Occupancy: homes, schools, factories, hospitals and public buildings carry different risk levels.
- Value and sensitivity of equipment, data systems and processes.
- Incoming power, telecom and data lines that can carry surges.
- Hazards such as fuel, chemicals or crowds, which raise the consequences of a strike.
The outcome
Keputusan
- A conclusion on whether an external lightning protection system is needed.
- A protection level, which sets the design of air terminals, conductors and earthing.
- Recommendations for surge protection at power and signal entry points.
- A design basis that installers, owners and insurers can all rely on.
Who it’s for
Where this work fits
Factory and warehouse owners
Large roofs and valuable equipment make a documented assessment worthwhile.
Schools, mosques and community buildings
Buildings where many people gather deserve a structured decision.
Owners of solar, EV and telecoms sites
Exposed sites where equipment damage is the main loss.
Homeowners on exposed sites
Hilltop and open-area houses that have had strike or surge damage.
How we work
From survey to handover
Site information
We collect plans, dimensions, occupancy details, services and any history of strike or surge damage.
Assessment by specialist partner
Our specialist partner carries out the formal risk calculation and issues the assessment.
Design and quotation
Based on the result, we design the installation, surge protection and testing scope, and quote it.
Installation and testing
Elektrika installs the system and tests earthing and continuity, with documents for your records.
Partner delivery
The assessment is carried out by a specialist partner
Elektrika does not perform the formal lightning risk calculation itself. This is done by a specialist partner experienced in the process. Elektrika coordinates the information, then carries out the electrical and installation works that follow: conductors, bonding, earthing, SPD and testing. Our lightning protection service page lists what we install.
